Aims of the course:
The course analyzes altruism and social capital in economic perspective and develops theory of social entrepreneurship.
 
Learning outcomes and competences:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to understand economic context of social phenomena usually standing at the edge of interest of economics, such as altruism and social capital. Furthermore, they will be able to understand principles of so-called non-profit sector at theoretical and practical level and will be able to critically analyze economic policy in this area. Thanks to the seminars students will also become familiar with relevant economic literature (mainly in English) and will gain the ability to view the problem from various perspectives.
 
Course contents:
1) Introduction, methodological minimum

2) Altruism and self-interest – economic perspective: "pure altruism" and possibility of its economic analysis, differences between self-interest and egoism, "Das Adam Smith Problem"

3) Theory of entrepreneurship (neoclassical theory of firm, Schumpeter, Kirzner) - comparison of main approaches of economic theory to the phenomenon of entrepreneur and entrepreneurship - contact points and friction areas

4) Social entrepreneurship - application of theory of entrepreneurship to "social" sphere, kinds of non-profit/non-market organizations, problem of relations between non-profit and market sectors

5) General theory of capital - view of capital in history of economic thought and problems of various concepts, forms of capital (financial, physical, human, social etc.)

6) Social capital: economics meets sociology - application of capital theory to interpersonal relations - benefits and problems of analysis, importance and creation of economic institutions

7) Problems – externalities and public goods - problems of private "non-profit" activities (efficiency, coordination, creation of positive and negative externalities etc.)

8) Theory of "social cycle" and social policy - relation between "non-profit" sector and the state, parallels between financial and "civic" sector (crowding-out effect, signaling problems etc.)

9) Application I – Private health insurance - case study of British "Friendly Societies"

10) Application II – Altruism vs. organ trade - questions of various institutional arrangements
